The promotion of science competencies and interest among learners was done through Science Fair activities that were carried out locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, e.g. by joining similar competitions in Durban, South Africa. Some 17 learners from UB Dax and Kolin Foundation participated in Science Fair activities during the year under review.
In the Erongo regional competition, 14 projects produced 1 gold, 15 silver, and 2 bronze medals. Altogether 17 Arandis learners participated in national science fair competitions, with a total of 12 science projects. The following medals were won: 6 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. One of the learners obtained the award for the best project overall. Four Grade 6 learners from UB Dax and two Grade 12 from Kolin Foundation participated in the international Science Fair in South Africa as well.
The promotion of science was enhanced by the establishment of a functional laboratory at Kolin Foundation. An inventory of the equipment and chemicals was compiled, while equipment and chemicals for UB Dax were also identified.
Spring School 2007
In total, 190 Grade 10 learners attended the Spring School at Ondangwa. Some 36 learners took part in biology and physical science lessons, while 59 attended the mathematics sessions. Some 100 Grade 12 learners participated in English and mathematics Spring School sessions at Arandis and Swakopmund. In addition, 734 Grade 7 learners attended the Arandis and Swakopmund sessions in subjects such English, mathematics and science.
A total of 150 Lower Primary learners from Arandis, Mondesa and Tamariskia were involved in educational activities during the school holidays which aimed to improve their reading competencies. Overall, 1,122 learners benefited from the Rössing Foundation's Spring School initiative.
