English

Winter school holiday workshops are conducted for Grade 12 students to sharpen skills in English, Mathematics and Science.

Practical workshop sessions for English focus on developing planning and oral skills, while one-on-one sessions with tutors help design personal profiles for learners. These profiles asked students to list their grades, study habits, work or community volunteer experience, inspirational materials and outline personal, educational and professional goals. They then design a tailor-made plan to suit r study needs.

Students who have attended Winter School reported that sessions helped to sustain a positive attitude, gave guidance for study plans and added to language proficiency.

Mathematics

Master Maths

The skill of problem solving is increasingly important as Namibia strives to become an industrialised nation by 2030. The Master Maths Programme provides learners interested in mathematics with an opportunity to find out more about the subject without syllabus restrictions and examination pressures.

The Rössing Foundation's Master Maths Computer Centre in Swakopmund, Arandis and Ondangwa assists primary, secondary school and Namibia College of Open Learning learners and teachers to acquire and improve mathematical knowledge and learn problem solving skills. It aims to foster a life-long learning and interest in mathematics, improve performance (results) in the subject and enable students to enter tertiary institutions of higher learning.

So far more than 4000 learners have enrolled at these three centres, where lessons are provided free of charge. Students range from gifted learners to those struggling with maths. Similar centres in South Africa have shown that students who attend regular sessions increase their school marks by about 20 percent.

Regional Mathematics Olympiad 2009

An Olympiad is a problem solving competition open to all “mathletes”. It aims to test innate problem solving skills, with problems restricted to those that require minimal background and high ingenuity.

In 2009, the Rössing Foundation Mathematics team, in partnership with the University of Namibia (UNAM) and Ministry of Education, launched the inaugural Regional Mathematics Olympiad.

The one-day event was hosted at the UNAM Northern Campus, Oshakati. Individuals and teams from the Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena and Omusati regions participated.

One of the goals of an Olympiad is to identify young talent, and is thus restricted to students not yet admitted to any undergraduate programmes. A total of 160 people participated.

Science

Rössing Foundation has built and currently operates three state-of-the art Science centres in Arandis, Swakopmund and Ondangwa. These aim to encourage interest in science-related careers, supplementing school curriculums by addressing backlogs and deficiencies in mathematics and science education. Centres emphasise practical learning and hands-on experience, enabling teachers, learners and other community members to see science in action, promoting scientific enquiry and insight.
